Major Events in Modern Chinese HIstory

  • Qing Dynasty

    The Qing dynasty lasted untill 1911. The Qing claimed authority over many states, including, Burma, Thailand, Laos, Nepal, Vietnam, and Korea. They entered a long period of decline, burdened with high taxes and limited land, the increasing peasant population had a hard time growing enough food to survive.
  • Beggining of Opium war

    1840-1842: The Opium War. Unequal Treaty, in Chinese history, any of a series of treaties in which China was forced to concede many of its territorial and sovereignty rights. British force China to "open" on unequal terms. At the end of the war this turns into the unequal treraties.
  • First Opium War

    The First Opium War concludes with the signing of the Treaty of Nanjing (Nanking). Which provides for the opening of the first five treaty ports ‑ in Shanghai, Ningbo, Xiamen (Amoy), Fuzhou (Foochow) and Guangzhou (Canton) ‑ and the cession of the island of Hong Kong to Great Britain. Almost 15 years later they break into a another opium war.
  • The Republic of China

    On January first 1912, the Republic of China is declared with SunYat‑sen as provincial president. Yuan Shikai, a Manchu general, then takes over. China's first constitution is proclaimed. This is the Republic of China.
  • THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA 1949

    On October 1, 1949, the People's Republic of China was formally established, with its national capital at Beijing. Mao Zedong declares the People's Republic of China. Chiang Kai‑shek and the KMT government flee to Taiwan.
