  • Third Grade Adventures

    Third Grade Adventures
I remember absolutely loving 3rd grade, mostly because I had an awesome, creative, innovative teacher. My teacher made every subject exciting, even ordering real lamb brains so that we could truly study the brain in science. My favorite part about 3rd grade was the "reading room" section in our classroom. It made the students excited to read, like it was something special.
  • Math Class Struggles

    Math Class Struggles
While I've had fairly easy success in school, I've always struggled with math. I was able to be in the advance math track, but I couldn't excel in it. I had to work extra hard for homework and tests, but I still didn't make good grades. However, my math teacher Mr. Jones was incredibly patient with me and spent extra time helping me truly understand each concept. I remember how ecstatic I felt when I finally made an A in his class.
  • Discovering the Greats

    Discovering the Greats
When I was in high school, I had the opportunity to take an honors literature class. Up until that point, I had never read any classic literature and I wasn't even sure what that meant. This class introduced me to amazing works such as Julius Caesar, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, and The Scarlett Letter. Experiencing these classics were the first steps in learning how to interpret and analyze literature.
  • Mrs. Cardwell

    Mrs. Cardwell
When I look back on highschool, the teacher that stands out the most to me is my science teacher, Mrs. Cardwell. She was the most sincere, patient teacher, one who genuinely cared for her students. I wanted to do well in her, simply because I had so much respect for her.
  • Philosophy Class

    Philosophy Class
In college, I took a series of philosophy courses that required me to interact with Plato, Virgil, Neitszche, and others. It really challenged me to think beyond my own experiences and think through what I really believe. My professor challenged us to construct arguments and find evidence in the text. I think these clasess made me excited to learn and discuss the things I was learning through literature.
  • American Literature

    American Literature
Taking American Literature was surprisingly one of the hardest classes I'd taken in college. I loved the class and the professor so much that it challenged me to work hard, even though I was struggling. I genuinely loved reading for class and was excited when I could contribute something intelligent in class. At the end of the semester, I decided to switch my major to English, which is one of the best decisions I've made.
  • Advance Writing Class

    Advance Writing Class
The most challenging and formative class for my writing was in an Advance Writing class I took my senior year in college. It was honestly a dry, painful class, but it was the first time I understood the connection between literacy and culture. Though the class itself wasn't exciting, the books we were reading opened up my eyes to the power of the written word to shape and be shaped by culture. It made me even more passionate about reading great literature.
