Kenyan Timeline

  • British East African Protectorate formed.

    British East African Protectorate formed.
    The British are now ruling over parts of East Africa which Kenya is apart of in 1895. This is the first movement of Britain into Kenya but it does not really start the settlement of Britain into Kenya until 1914 which was the start of the 1914-18 war. During the long spans of time Kenya was used mostly just used for coffee growth which was a leading money grower for Britain.
  • The Kenyan African Union (KAU) is formed

    The Kenyan African Union (KAU) is formed
    As the KAU is formed they are the first start for push for independence. Throughout the colonization of Kenya the KAU was the biggest help for the Kenyan people to gain their independence but they are ended when their leader Jomo Kenyatta is sent to jail.
  • Mau Mau begins

    Mau Mau begins
    With the end of the KAU the Mau Mau are the next Kenyan people to try and push for the independence of Kenya. They made the biggest jump I’m the independence of Kenya because they led the revolt against Britain and their revolts against Britain ultimately weaken British forces and helped made the Independence of Kenya come faster.
  • Dedan Kimathi is captured

    Dedan Kimathi is captured
    The leader of KLFA, general Dedan Kimathi, is captured by British troops. His capturing leads to the defeat of the Mau Mau and about 100,000 Kenyans are imprisoned and about 11,503 Mau Mau are defeated compared to 30 British soldiers. Dedan is later killed by British forces in 1957 in the same year where Ghana gains their independence.
  • Jomo Kenyatta freed

    Jomo Kenyatta freed
    When Jomo Kenyatta is freed he assumes presidency of Kenya African National Union (Kanu). This helps the push for Kenyan independence because with the release of Jomo they are able to get back their biggest force from before the colonization of Kenya. With Jomo back this helps them be able to get their independence and 2 years later they gain their independence from Britain.
  • Kenya gains independence

    Kenya gains independence
    Kenya finally gets freedom from Britain and Jomo becomes the prime minister of Kenya during all of this. With the independence Kenya officially gets the name of Kenya and pushes Britain out of Africa. “Prince Philip accepts an invitation to preside over the lowering of the Union Jack and the raising of the Kenyan flag at a ceremony on 12 December 1963, attended by thousands of celebrating Kenyans.” Then in 1964 Jomo Kenyatta becomes the president and Oginga Odinga as vice president of Kenya.
