Captain Oliver H. Perry defeated the British in the Battle of Lake Erie, even though the British’s naval army was superior to the U.S.
This naval battle gave the U.S. control of the Great Lakes. Perry reported to Congress “We have met the enemy and they are ours.” -
Napoleon was defeated in Europe. After that Great Britain sent 18,000 veteran troops to Canada. U.S. forces were defeated in the battle of Lundy’s Lane. British Army occupied Washington D.C. and burned the Capitol and other public buildings.

The British attacked Fort McHenry which protected Baltimore and the American troops successfully defended it. Francis Scott Key witnessed this battle and wrote the Star Spangled Banner which is now our national anthem.

British attacked New Orleans. The Treaty of Ghent was signed in Europe officially ended the war. But the treaty did not reach the United States until after the battle was fought. The war is now over and the Battle of New Orleans was the last battle of the War of 1812.
