    General William Henry Harris defeated the Indians. The Indians tried to sneak up on the Americans even though they were outnumbered. The Americans stood their ground and then burned the Prophetstown when the Indians ran. The Ohio River Valley is now safe for settlers who want to settle farther West and the Indians are no longer a threat.

    The Americans lead an attack on Canada from Detroit. They were defeated. American soldiers were outnumbered, poorly equipped, and lacked training. This defeat lead to two more defeats of the Americans in attempts to invade Canada.

    The invasion of Niagara was unsuccessful. The American soldiers were outnumbered, poorly equipped, and lacked training. The defeats of Niagara and Montreal are because the New York Militia refused to cross into Canada and help the regular American army.

    Captain Oliver H. Perry defeated the British in the Battle of Lake Erie, even though the British’s naval army was superior to the U.S.
    This naval battle gave the U.S. control of the Great Lakes. Perry reported to Congress “We have met the enemy and they are ours.”

    Napoleon was defeated in Europe. After that Great Britain sent 18,000 veteran troops to Canada. U.S. forces were defeated in the battle of Lundy’s Lane. British Army occupied Washington D.C. and burned the Capitol and other public buildings.

    British attack Washington D.C. and burn the Capitol, White House, and many other public buildings. President Madison and Congress escaped safely. This event is important because the president doesn’t have a home and the Capitol building is important to keep the government going.

    The British attacked Fort McHenry which protected Baltimore and the American troops successfully defended it. Francis Scott Key witnessed this battle and wrote the Star Spangled Banner which is now our national anthem.
  • Battle of New Orleans

    British attacked New Orleans. The Treaty of Ghent was signed in Europe officially ended the war. But the treaty did not reach the United States until after the battle was fought. The war is now over and the Battle of New Orleans was the last battle of the War of 1812.
