Japanese Immigrant Autobiography

  • My Birthday

September 30, 1845, I, Kira Kobayashi was born in Tokyo, Japan. I was born into a big family with 4 older brothers and 3 older sisters.
  • THE MOVE

My father has been in America for 3 years, he had to leave before I was born. He finally made enough money for my family to come over to America to live with him. We packed a few things and got on a boat. I'm only 3 years old, and I'm very confused why we are moving, mom says it's for the best. I'm just glad that i get to see my dad for the first time ever!
  • Arriving at Angel Island

Well we arrived at Angel Island, my mom said they have to inspect us before we go into America. It's very crowded and noisy here, I'm glad my 23 year-old brother, Tatsuyuki, is carrying me. Tatsuyuki and I made it past inspections, but we can't find the others. He thinks they went on without us, so we got our stuff and went off to San Fransisco.
  • Heading to Pennsylvania

Well it's been 5 years since i last saw my mom and my other brothers and sister, but me and Tatsuyuki are doing just fine. He got a job, doing who knows what, and saved up some money so we could move. He bought us both train tickets to Pittsburg and we left around 5:30am. It was a long ride but we made it there at 2:30pm. My brother found an appartment for just the two of us.
  • Death of a Friend

Today I got a telegraph from my neighbor while I was at work. She said that when she went to go check on my friend Fiona, who has been staying at my house for 18 years, she was dead. For about 3-4 weeks she has been sick with Dyphtheria. I knew sooner or later that if she didn't get better she would die, i just didn't think it would be this soon. I rushed home and looked and saw my dead friend. I have never cried so hard in my life than in that moment.
