    Byzantine Empire

    1. The dark ages were known as a time of little order and widespread destruction, but the Byzantine empire was a stronghold that held up throughout the dark ages.
    2. The empire was formed from the remaining sections of the Eastern Roman empire, which lacked a king to rule it.

    Sack of Rome and Fall of the Western Roman Empire

    1. Before the Visigoths invaded Rome, they surrounded it for 2 years, cutting off all trade. Rome slowly succumbed to starvation and disease, and the population dwindled. This made it an easy invasion for the Visigoths.
    2. The Eastern half of the empire lived on for many centuries. It is now known as the Byzantine empire.

    Clovis, King of the Franks

    1. Clovis was known for converting to Christianity during his reign. He used this as a tactical advantage to win over the people he captured.
    2. Clovis' tactic to possess and hold a strong army was to use the people he captured as soldiers. He treated captives as equals to his men, this inspiring them to fight for him.

    Theodora, Wife of Justinian

    *The birthdate should be c. 500, but the date boxes on timetoast don't allow for letters when entering dates.
    1. Theodora married Justinean when he was over 40 years old, and Roman Law had to be changed. It was previously illegal for a man to marry after 40.
    2.Theodora was very smart, and her opinion was valued by Justinian. Unlike many women at the time, her say in key decisions was almost equal to that of Justinian.

    1. The Magyars were Steppe people who were known for plundering villages.
    2. They became known as Hungarians because their military styles were similar to those of the Huns.

    Bubonic Plague

    1. The bubonic plague is a zoonosis disease that is transmitted by the fleas that live in rats' fur.
    2. After a person is bitten by a flea, symptoms would appear in 2-5 days. Symptoms included chills, fever, and heachaches among others.

    Nika Revolt

    1. The Nika Revolt marked the largest riots in Constantinople's history, leading to the death of nearly 30,000 people.
    2. The revolt nearly brought the end of the Byzantine empire. Justinian was preparing to flea by boat when his wife, Theodora,convinced him to stay and fight. "Purple is a good color for a funeral," she said.

    The Muslim Invasions spanned from the early 700's to the late 1200's
    1. A muslim invasion is what destroyed the Visigothic kingdom in Spain.
    2. In 735, the Muslims sacked Aries and Avignon.

    1. He was born near the mouth of the Danube River.
    2. Alaric's first campaign, into Italy in 394, opened his eyes as to how weak imperial armies were in Europe. This is what inspired him to be aggressive in his invasions.

    1. Justinian's biggest goal as king was to recapture the Mediterranean sea as a "Roman Lake." He was ultimately successful in this challenge.
    2. He was known for swindling his subjects in order to gain money. He often accomplished this by changing the wording of contracts, stealing, and writing fake letters.

    Life of St. Benedict

    1. He was almost poisoned twice, only to be saved by what could only be described as divine intervention. Once his glass of poison wine shattered as he was about to drink it, and another time his poisoned bread was stolen and taken away by a bird.

    1. Charles supported missionaries and was in control of the Frankish church.
    2. He was lauded as a great military leader as well as a warrior.

    Viking Invasions

    1. The vikings looted and also conquered parts of England, France, Germany, Ireland, and other territories in Europe.
    2. They were best known for their ship building, which were sturdy enough to voyage long distances in the ocean but also maneuverable enough to navigate narrow rivers. This made their attacks much harder to predict and defend against.

    1. Ivar was the leader of the Great Heathen Army at the time of their invasion of England.
    2. Ivar's father, Ragnar Lodbrok, was also a very powerful and influential viking.

    Life of Charlemagne

    1. Charlemagne founded the Holy Roman Empire and influenced the economy as Europe as well as the life of its people.
    2. Charlemagne and Carloman, his brother, split the empire in half when their father died. In 771 Carloman mysteriously died and Charlemagne became the ruler of the whole kingdom.
