On the 21st of May 1991, Sister Irene McCormack was executed in an unfair trial by the terrorist group the Shining Path. She was convicted of feeding the poor.

The bodies of the 5 people killed with Irene could not be moved the next day until the authorities had given their consent. Irene was burried in the Huasahuasi cemetery, near where she had been working. When Mary MacKillop because a saint on October 10th 2010, Irene McCormack was also elected to be a saint.
