    Thomas Savery invented the Steam engine in 1698 in England. The steam engine was a machine that converted the heat energy of steam into useable mechanical energy. This invention was needed because England had a fuel problem due to lack of lumber, and steam was a perfect substitute.
  • Typewriter

    Henry Mill invented the typewriter in 1714 in England. It was invented to make it easier to read other people's writings. It used stamps to create perfect representations of letters, which were then made into words, which were then made into sentences. This invention was needed to make reading easier to the people, to help spread ideas. It changed society because it made counterfeiting more difficult and made it easier to read.
  • Flying Shuttle

    The Flying Shuttle was invented by John Kay in 1733 in England. The flying shuttle helped to incerase the speed of the weaking operation. This invention was needed to speed up the weavign process and to create a bigger quantity of weaved products. It made products more easily available to the people.
  • Spinning Jenny

    James Hargreaves completed inventing the Spinning Jenny in 1754 in England. The Spinning Jenny accuratly imitated the drafting of human fingers. It was needed because the increase in speed from the weaving market required an increase in drafted cotton fibers,, produced now by the Spinning Jenny. It changed society because it inspired the water frame, that sped up the creation of clothing, textiles, and other weaved goods.
  • Cotton Gin

    Eli Whitney invented the Cotton Gin in 1793 in Georgia. The Cotton Gin was used to seperate the cotton from the cotton seeds. This invention was needed because other machines at the time did not seperate all seeds from all of the types of cotton. Also, the cotton gin was needed to increase speed of the production of cotton. It caused cotton to become the main crop of Southern society and prolonged slavery.
  • Phonograph

    Thomas Edison invented the Phonograph in 1877 in the United States. The Phonograph created mechanically cut impressions on a recording cylinder and was used to record sound. It was needed to spread entertainment to those who could not have afforded it previously. It changed the entertainment and music industries by helping to make certain types of music more popular and more easily shared.
