  • Jethro Tull (1674-1741)

    In 1701 he created the first horse drawn seed drill. Economically sowed the seed in neat rows, instead of the prior technique of just randomly spreading seeds by hands.
  • Thomas Newcomen (1664-1729)

    In 1712 Thomas invented the first atmospheric steam engine. It was used to drain mines and pump the water out.
  • John Kay (1704- 1780)

    In 1733, he created the flying shuttle. He took the shuttle that you having to move side to side by hand and mounted it on his wheels on a track. He used paddles to move it side to side thus speeding up the process of weaving greatly.
  • James Hargreaves (1721-1778)

    In 1764, he created the spinning jenny. It was a hand powered multiple spinning machine. It allowed people to spin several threads at one time, speeding up production.
  • James Watt (1736-1819)

    In 1768, James created a new model of the steam engine. He came up with a separate condenser to reduce waste of the original steam engine after working on repairing one.
  • Samuel Crompton (1753-1827)

    In 1779, he created the spinning mule. It allowed large-scale production of high quality thread and yarn. It drew out and gave the final twists to the cotton fibers at the same time.
  • Henry Cort (1740-1800)

    In 1782, he came up with the puddling process. He set up iron works in Fontley, Hampshire, where he created the rolling mill. The mill produced higher quality of iron.
  • Edmund Cartwright (1743-1823)

    In 1785, he created the power loom. The loom combined threads to make cloth. Around the same time he also created a wool-combing machine.
  • Eli Whitney (1765-1825)

    In 1794, he created the cotton gin. The cotton gin sped up the process of picking seeds out of the cotton fibers. The production of cotton rapidly increased.
  • Alessandro Volta (1745-1827)

    In 1800, he invented the electric battery, then called the "voltaic pile". It produced the first steady flow of electric current.
  • Robert Fulton ( 1765- 1815)

    In 1807 Robert Fulton created the first steamboat. It carried passengers between New York City and Albany, New York. He also created the first steam warship and submarine.
  • Cyrus Field (1819- 1892)

    In 1866 Cyrus was credited for the laying of the first transatlantic cable.The cable went across the Atlantic ocean and he was credited on both sides. Later he was one of the founders of the New York, Newfoundland and London Telegraph company and the Atlantic Telegraph company.
