  • Seed Drill

    Jethro Tull invented the seed drill in 1701. This was very helpful to farmers. This drill would make rows of dirt, place the seed in the neat rows, and then cover the seed again.Until this was invented, this process was done by hand.

  • Flying Shuttle

    The flying shuttle was invented by John Kay.This was a loom that helped weavers weave faster.A large loom usually needed two weavers to get the job done. The flying shuttle only required one worker.His home was stormed by textile workers in 1753 because they thought that his invention could take away their jobs.

  • Spinning Jenny

    The Spinning Jenny was invented by James Hargreaves. This machine dealt with large portions of harvested cotton.The machine is hand-powered and was the first step up from the spinning wheel.Legend has it that he came up with the name for this machine after his daughter named Jenny.

  • Steamboat

    James Watt patented a better version of of the steam engine in 1769.After his invention, many inventors wanted to make a steam powered ship.In 1787, in America, John Fitch made the first successful steam boat that was five feet long. He eventually received the patent for the steamboat about 4 years later.

  • Cotton Gin

    Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin 1793.His machine removed the seed from cotton. This was very relieving for the cotton pickers in the South.Whitney did not want his machine to copied so he filed for a patent. He received in March of 1794.

  • Tunnel

    The Thames Tunnel was the first tunnel to go under a river.Marc Brunel came up the design.The production of this tunnel started in 1825, but it had to be stopped multiple times because the river kept on bursting through the walls.In 1843, the tunnel was finally opened to the public.The tunnel was about 23 feet tall and 37 feet wide. The length was about 1,500 feet.

  • Telegraph

    The telegraph was started to be used in 1809. The wires only sent messages about 2000 feet away.The method used was very unreasonable, but it was a big step of progress.Eventually, Samuel Morse created a code consisting of dots and dashes and the messages could be sent across the globe.The telegraph has now been replaced phones and fax machines.

  • Gasoline Engine

    Etienne Lenoir created the first successful gas engine.His invention used a mixture of coal gas and air.This was a step up from the steam powered machines.People knew that gunpowder was old-fashioned. They knew that there was something better out there. He changed the automobile engine to accept a liquid fuel.

    Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone shortly after the successful telegraph.He used his knowledge on music and nature and sound to help him create the wires for the sound part of the telephone.He and Elisha Gray both came up with this idea at the same time. They actually both rushed to get their invention patented first.

  • Phonograph

    Thomas Edison invented the phonograph on August 12,1877. He was trying to make a device similar to the telegraph when he realized he was recording.He first recorded himself saying “Mary had a little lamb.”People were skeptical of his invention.Soon people were in awe instead of doubt though.
