  • Newcomen Steam Engine

    Newcomen Steam Engine
    The Newcomen Steam Engine was the first device to mechanically used steam. It was primarily used to pump water out of mines. The steam engine was very complex, and it was expensive to run. It was later replaced in 1769 by James Watt. Picture Citation:

    "Flying Shuttle"
    The "Flying Shuttle" was invented by John Kay in 1733. It was a device that accelerated weaving. It greatly increased weaving productivity. To this day, the flying shuttle is still used by some people.

    Spinning Jenny
    The spinning jenny was invented by James Hargreaves. It helped produce yarn more effectively. He invented in in 1765, but it was patented in 1770. One person could produce 8 or more spools of yarn at once using the spinning jenny. Picture Citation:

  • Cotton Gin

    Cotton Gin
    The Cotton Gin was invented by Eli Whitney. It was made to quickly seperate the cotton fibers and the seeds. The cotton gin could clean 50 pounds of lint every day. Unfortunately, Whitney's invention increased the amount of slaves in the south so more cotton could be produced. Picture Citation:

  • Typewriter

    Typewriter
    The typewriter, or "typographer" was patented on July 23, 1829 by William Burt. You rotated a lever which pressed ink letters on the paper to get it to work. Burt's typewriter was very slow in typing and no one wanted to buy it. He eventually sold the rights to another company, who also found no use in the typewriter. Picture Citation:

  • The Gatling Gun

    The Gatling Gun
    The Gatling Gun was patented on November 4, 1862 by Richard Gatling. It was first used in the Civil War and remained in service from 1862-1911. The Gatling Gun was also used in the Spanish-American war. The Royal Navy also used Gatling Guns against Egyptians in 1882. Picture Citation:

  • Telephone

    The first practical telephone was invented by Alexander Graham Bell. His first clear transmission when inventing the telephone was on March 10, 1876 when Alexander Graham Bell said "Mr. Watson, come here, I want to see you." Mr. Watson, his assistant, heard him clearly from the next room. The first long distance call was on August 10, 1866, to his family in Ontario.
  • Diesel Engine

    The Diesel Engine was created by Rudolf Diesel. He used his Diesel Engine to convert heat into work. Forms of diesel engines are still used today. A disadvantage to diesel engines is that the diesel exhaust is a for of carcinogen which is a cause for lung cancer
  • Escalator

    Jesse W. Reno invented the first escalator in 1892. He installed it at the Old Iron Pier in New York City in 1896. It traveled along a 25 degree angle. It was also used on the Broklynn Bridge.
