    Formation of the Muslim League
    In 1906, in competition with the Congress Party which was made up of mostly Hindus, the Muslim League was formed. This nationalist group was focused on protecting Muslim interests because they felt the Congress Party looked out primaraly for Hindu rights. The Muslim League stated it would never accept independance if it meant rule by Hindu-dominated parties displaying how people strived for equaity during the country's fight for independance.

    Amritsar Massacre
    This massacre in which many non-violent protesters gathered in Jallianwala Bagh to challenge British authority was a crusial event that sparked movements for Indian independance. On this day hundreds of unarmed Indians were killed and many more were wounded by British soldiers.The fact that the British were willing to shoot at peaceful protesters only made Indians more mad and push even harder for independance for their country in the coming years.

    Indian Non-Cooperation Movement
    This movement, which was the first great Gandhi led peaceful movement, was a significant event in India's push for independance. The movement aimed to resist British rule in India through nonviolent actions. This included simple things such as refusing to buy British goods or switching to local handicrafts for a task. Gandhi's ability to rally hundreds of thousands of Indian citizens started to make the British fearful.

    Civil Disobedience Movement
    This movement, led by Mohandas Gandhi, was sparked by the Salt March in which thousands of Indians followed Gandhi in peaceful protest of Britians rule that stated that Indians couldn't sell salt. This act of disobedeince, along with many more to follow durung the movement, didn't bring India inderpendance but it did undermind British authority amongst the Indian population. As a result, 60,000 peaceful protestors, including Gandhi, were arested because the British didn't know how to respond.
  • Gandhi-Irwin Pact

    Gandhi-Irwin Pact
    The Gandhi-Irwin pact was an agreement signed on March 5, 1931, between Mohandas K. Gandhi and British Lord Irwin. This marked the end of a period of civil disobedience against British rule in India. Irwin was looking for a way to end Gandhi's movement that generated worldwide publicity. He didn't want Britian to get embarrassed again such as when the whole world witnessed Gandhi's arrest at the end of the peaceful Salt March. This pact was a major victory in India's fight for independace.

    Clashes in Calcutta
    For four days in August, Hindu and Muslim riots in the city of Calcutta led to bloodshed. In the end 5,000 ended up dead and 15,000 were hurt. This unfortunate outcome resulted in the two parties coming to the realization that their conflicts must be solved in order for the country to gain independance. The two groups issues were a main reason Britian had delayed Indian independence.
  • Quit India Movement

    Quit India Movement
    This movement, in which Gandhi and the Congress demanded an end to British rule in India, was the last mass movement Gandhi started. After the British heard about the request, India's entire top-level leadership, including Gandhi, were arrested. Gandhi knew it was out of his control to led this movement so he issued that it was a time to "do or die".This movement, more than anything, united the Indian people against British rule, serving a big role in India's fight for independance.

    On August 15, 1947 India achieved its long-sought independence from Britain. On this day Britian partitioned the country into two independant nations, India and Pakistan. After multiple riots of Hindu and Muslim people, Britian reached this agreement. August 15th is a day celebrated each year in India as a national holiday to celebrate the countrries win over Britian.
