  • Kashmir War

    War over disputed territory in Kashmir with China. India won Diu, Daman, and Goa.
  • Change in Prime Minister

    Nehru's daughter, Indira Gandhi, becomes the new prime minister.
  • War with Pakistan

    Third war with Pakistan over Bangladesh, which used to be East Pakistan.
  • State of Emergency

    Indira Gandhi, the prime minister, declares a state of emergency after being found guilty of electoral malpractice.
  • Janata Party

    In West Bengal, the Janata Party comes to power in 1977. This party is Communist and came to power as a result of Indira Gandhi's Congress Party losing in an election.
  • Assassination

    Indira Gandhi was assassinated by Sikh bodyguards. Her son, Rajiv, takes over.
  • Rajiv Gandhi

    Following his mothers assassination, Rajiv was also killed by a suicide bomber.
