    Queen Victoria was given the title Empress of India by the British Parliament
    In 1877, Benjamin Disraeli, Conservative Prime Minister, had Queen Victoria proclaimed as Empress of India. India was already under crown control after 1858, but this title was a gesture to link the monarchy with the empire further and bind India more closely to Britain.

    The British government divided Bengal into separate Hindu and Muslim sections
    The Partition of Bengal in 1905, was made on October 16, by then Viceroy of India, Lord Curzon. Partition was promoted for administrative regions; Bengal was as large as France but with a significantly larger population. By splitting the province, an improved administration could be established in the east where, subsequently, the population would benefit from new schools and employment opportunities. However, other motives lurked behind the partition plan.

    The Jallianwala Bagh massacre, also known as the Amritsar massacre, took place on 13 April 1919 when a crowd of nonviolent protesters, along with Baishakhi pilgrims, who had gathered in Jallianwala Bagh, Amritsar, Punjab, were fired upon by troops of the British Indian Army under the command of Colonel Reginald Dyer.

    Mohandas Gandhi became the leader of the  Indian independence movemnt and the Indian National Congress
    Was known by many as “the great-souled one.” He began his activism as an Indian immigrant in South Africa in the early 1900s, and in the years following World War I became the leading figure in India’s struggle to gain independence from Great Britain. Gandhi was imprisoned several times during his pursuit of non-cooperation, and undertook a number of hunger strikes to protest the oppression of India’s poorest classes, among other injustices.

    On this day in 1939, in response to Hitler’s invasion of Poland, Britain and France, both allies of the overrun nation declare war on Germany. Now Britain was also focused on defeating Hitler and could no longer put all of their time and worries into focusing on Gandhi and the independence of India.

    When India gained its independence from Great Britain Muhammad Ali Jinnah demanded that a new country needed to be formed for Muslims and that it would be named Pakistan. Because of him Muslims now have their own country separate from Hindus and other various religions.

    After so many of Gandis peacful riots the British decided it was time to grant India their independence. By Gandhi being so peaceful with his revolts it showed Britain just how bad they wanted it and how willing they were to die and get beaten for their cause.

    The long-awaited agreement ended 200 years of British rule and was hailed by Indian independence leader Mohandas Gandhi as the “noblest act of the British nation.” However, religious strife between Hindus and Muslims, which had delayed Britain’s granting of Indian independence after World War II. One reason the British were so lenient to granting India their freedom was because of the feuds between the Muslims and Hindus.

    Gandhi was the main leader in the peaceful riots against the British and their control over India, he went on many fasts, and was arrested multiple times all to help India gain independence. But in the end he had created a few haters and in the end one of them decided they hated Gandhi so much they wanted to end his life

    A new Indian constitution was created and Jawaharal Nehru became the Indian first prime minister
    After India gained its independence from Great Britain it had its issues so it had to create a new constitution for its country. They also needed a leader, because at this point Gandhi has been assassinated and could lo longer lead them so Jawaharal Nehru became the first prime minister.
