    Britian's Control of India

    Great Britain took over india from its previous rulers, the Mongols. Britain’s control was both indirect and direct. They developed the following industries in India: cotton, tea, iron, and coal. Britain also installed railroads and telegraph lines across the country.

    The Indian National Congress was formed by Allan Octavian Hume. The congress’s goal was to get Indians more rights and more say in British rule. As the movement developed Indians wanted complete control over their government.

    Gandhi's Resistance

    In 1919 Gandhi started a passive resistance to protest the Rowlatt Acts. The Rowlatt Acts gave British authorities the power to repress anyone who disagreed with the British rule. Gandhi lead boycotts of British products and organizations, even school. Gandhi paused his movement and was then arrested. The movement then started again after his release. This time he went on hunger strikes to protest the treatment of the poor, which lead to reforms.

    Britain gave India its independence in 1947, but split the territory into two countries: India and Pakistan. India was given their freedom because after WWII Britain no longer had the funds to keep troops in India.

    The 1947-1948 War

    In October of 1947 India went to war with Pakistan over Pakistan support. Pakistan supported Muslim insurgency in Kashmir. India the sent its troops to Kashmir after the Maharaja asked for assistance. Regular Pakistani troops joined the fight later in May. They continued to fight until the UN created a cease fire. The piece of land Indian recieved was named the Indian Union.

    On January 30th, Gandhi was assassinated in New Delhi. Gandhi was assassinated at age 78 by Hindu supporter Nathuram Godse. Gandhi was assassinated because cause he supported the creation of a muslim state which lead to the creation of Pakistan.

    Gas Leak
    On December 2 a tank of methyl isocyanate at a pesticide plant leaked gas into Bhopal, India. The leak killed between 3,000 to 6,000 people. The Union Carbide plant was losing money so it lower production value by creating methyl isocyanate. Water then leaked into the tank which caused the methyl isocyanate to heat up. The water leaked because of faulty valves. Six safety feature were supposed to keep the gas in but due to bad maintenance the fumes leaked to the public. In addition to the dead

    India's Nuclear Testing
    In 1998 the Indian government announced that they were doing secret nuclear test. The last nuclear test they did was in 1974. The nuclear test site is located on 93 miles from the Pakistan border. This creating even more tension between the two countries as they had already fought wars over land. Pakistan then began testing their own nuclear weapons.

    Odisha Cyclone
    On October 29, 1999 a 300 mph cyclone hit Odisha. The cyclone forced evacuations in Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Puri and Ganjam. 50,000 people died according to an estimate, which orphaned 1,500 kids. Approximately 13 million people were affected by the cyclone(destroyed property, injury, loss of loved ones).
  • INdia's First Female President

    INdia's First Female President
    Pratibha Patil was elected president on July 19th, 2007. Despite women still facing discrimination 72-year-old Patil won with two thirds of votes. Her opposition claimed that she didn’t have the qualifications for the job and the only thing that got her elected was her loyalty to the Gandhi family.
