  • Opium Wars

    Opium wars were two wars fought between china and Great Britain. Opium, from Great Britain, was causing addiction in china. China wanted to suppress this opium trade with Great Britain and war broke out due to this.
  • Matthew Perry opens Japan

    Matthew Perry, on behalf of the US government, forced japan to enter trade with United States. He also demanded a treaty allowing trade and opening of Japanese ports.
  • Sepoy Rebellion

    The British east India company had control of India at the time. The east India company upgraded to the Enfield rifle, which used beef and pork fat cartridges. When the sepoys used these cartridges, they had to bite into it with their teeth. In Hinduism, it is forbidden to eat cows, so these cartridges majorly offended the sepoys which caused them to rebel.
  • Building of Suez Canal

    Suez canal was a small man-made canal also known as “The highway to India”. It was important for maritime transport and is very valuable to Egypt.
  • Scramble for Africa

    The scramble for Africa was during the time of European imperialism. Countries like France, Great Britain, Germany, and Italy all invaded Africa to colonize it. By the end of this “scramble”, 90% of Africa was taken over and colonized.
  • Berlin Conference

    This event was also known as the Congo conference. The berlin conference took away any form of government Africa had at the time. The main reason to hold this conference was to regulate European colonization and trade in Africa during the period of imperialism.
  • Leopold II (Congo)

    Leopold II possessed Congo the free state as his own private property. He wanted to make a fortune off his land, so he make the Congolese people provide certain amounts or rubber and ivory. If the people didn’t give their required amount of rubber/ivory, they were forced to give their hands.
  • British control Egypt/Nile

    When the British took over Egypt, they soon realized that they would also be in charge of the Nile River. They decided to transform Egypt into a cotton farm for textiles. The British did many things in order to control the Nile River. The people of Egypt benefitted from the river, and so did the British
  • Boxer Rebellion

    This rebellion was a violent anti-Christian uprising in china. The boxers started this to oppose imperialism expansion and Christian missionaries. The great powers came in and defeated the Chinese forces.
  • India national moverment/End of East India Company

    British/east India Company ruled India for two centuries. A nationalist movement started in 1947. India and Pakistan were finally independent.
