    Before Imperialism
    Tanzania had a population of mostly hunters. Soon, people from the north showed them how to use agriculture to their advantage. More people bergan flooding the area from the west parts of Africa and they introduced soiclal and political views as well as iron working skills.

    Between 1884 and 1885, the German East Africa Company made treaties with cheifs of Tanganyika. In 1887, Colonial rule was established. The mission was to keep to law and order in the country which would later lead to trade.

    Resistence to German Expansion
    Between 1891 and 1894, Chief Mkwawa led the Hehe Tribe in resiting German rule. Rival tribes aided in defeating the tribe and Chief Mkwawa commited suicide in 1898 after being cornered
  • Type of Rule

    At first, Germany did not have nay intentions in improving the educational system in Tanganyika, but it turned out critical. They believed that if the population was smarter then they could participate in german rule which would make it indirect rule and it could lead to the people being more clean and orderly.
  • Maji Maji Rebellion

    Maji Maji Rebellion
    The Maji Maji Rebellion began in 1905 but the governer, Gustov Adolf Van Gotzen, put an end to it quickly. A scandel soon followed and in 1907, Berherd Dernburg was choosen to reform the colonial administration.
  • Belgium Rule

    Belgium Rule
    Sfter World War I, the Belgium took control of what was German East Africa. The Belgium were openly racist and brutally stopped any attempts of revolt.
  • Independece

    Independece
    Belgiums rule was very unpopular with the Hutu and many fled to Uganda. In the 1950's, Hutu farmers went on strike and it forced the Belgium to grant them independece in 1961.
  • Rwandan Genocide

    Rwandan Genocide
    In 1994, over the span of 100 days, over 800,000 people were killed in Rwandan which became known as the Rwandan Genocide. The Genocide was a result of years of tnesion between the Tutsi and Hutu groups of Rwanda.
