  • British Owns Suez Canal

    In 1875, Britain gained control on the Suez Canal which was a profitable canal to Britain.
  • Britain Annexes Transvaal

    Britain Annex Transvaal which the Boers lived on. The caused the Boers to be mad and revolt in 1881
  • Battle of Ulundi

    This is the battle where the Zulus, a nation in Africa, lost to Britain. Although the Zulus lost, they nearly defeated Britain with spears and shields under the leadership of Shaka.

    Berlin Conference

    The Berlin Conference was where fourteen European countries divided Africa. No African ruler was invited to the Conference nor did the European countries think about the Africans and their culture.
  • Cameroon and Togo

    Germany claims Cameroon and Togo as Protectorates.
  • Battle of Adowa

    In this battle, Ethiopia became the first successful African country to rebel and win. Menelik II, the leader of Ethiopia, successfully played the Italians, French and British against each other.

    France and Britain claim land along the Niger River. Britain want to fight France for it, but France doesn't.

    Boer War

    The Boers, Dutch famers, went to war with Britain over land in southern Africa which had gold and diamonds. This was the first modern "total war". After the burning of Boer farms and the placement of black South Africans in concentration camps, Britain won.

    Maji-Maji Rebellion

    In German East Africa, Africans started to believe that there was a magic water, maji-maji, that could turn German bullets into water. However, the water didn't work and caused 75,000 people to die.
  • Boer Republic Gains Self-Rule

    In 1906, Britain granted the Boers self-rule to escape financial burden.
