Imperialism

  • The First Opium War

    The Chinese needed nothing from Europe and were therefore a hard trading partner. Europe traded with silver, but Britain began to trade using opium. This drug addicted the country. China fought back, but the british steam boats dominate.
  • The Sepoy Rebellion

    The company BETIco ruled India using Sepoys. British forces switched to Einfeld rifles, which used pig fat to seal their cartreges. The indian sepoys rebelled, because this was against their religion.
  • The Meiji Restoration

    Japan was a locked country where nobody got in and nobody got out. Commodore Perry arrives with American warships and overthows the shogunate.
  • The building of the Suez Canal

    The Suez canal halved the time it took to transport goods through Africa. 7% of the world's maritime traffic traveled through there. The canal was built by the French, and was a relitively easy build, since Egypt's ground is flat.
  • Scramble for Africa

    Europe sees Africa as a source for slave trade. Eventually, many tradable goods such as ivory, sugar, and rubber are found and Europe wants to colonize and grab as many territories as possible. The industrial revolution is the cause of this need for resources.
  • Dr. Livingstone's Exploration

    Dr. Livingstone was sent by Leopold II to scout an area of Africa. He made treaties with local tribal leaders.
    Famous quote: "Dr. Livingstone, I presume."
  • Leopold II takes control of Congo

    Leopold takes over the Congo and forces the people there to slave over making rubber and goods for him to sell, else he cut off their hands. He makes tons of money and results in the loss of tons of lives.
  • Berlin Conference

    This conference regulated European trade and colonization in Africa, which was quickly divided amoungst the Industrial powers of Europe.
  • The Maxim Gun

    The Maxim gun was invented in 1884. The invention of this gun led to the overtaking of many African colonies which Europeans weren't able to conquer before. The gun allowed for Europeans to practically wipe out the Arican rebellers, which made for easy takeover.
  • The Boxer Rebellion

    This rebellion group in China stood up to the foreigners who were dominating. They took a European section in Bejing hostage, and held it for several months. The rebellion is squashed.
