    Starting as a monopolistic trading body, the company became involved in politics and acted as an agent of British imperialism in India from the early 18th century to the mid-19th century. The company was formed to share in the East Indian spice trade.

    Queen Victoria crowned empress of India
    In 1877, Benjamin Disraeli, Conservative Prime Minister, had Queen Victoria proclaimed as Empress of India. India was already under crown control after 1858, but this title was a gesture to link the monarchy with the empire further and bind India more closely to Britain.

    The war started on October 11, 1899 and ended May 31, 1902. It was between the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland fighting against the South African Republic and the Orange Free State.
