  • European Trade with African becomes well established

    European nations wanted more resources to fuel their industrial production. They looked to Africa as a source of raw materials and as a market for industrial products.
  • East India Company collapses due to Sepoy Rebellion; British Raj begins

    The sepoy mutiny outbreak caused uprisings that spread over much of norhern India. Both the British and the sepoys tried to slaughter each other's armies. Finally the East India company collapsed.
  • Suez Canal links the Mediterranean and Red Seas

    The human made waterway that cut through the isthmus of Suez, known as the Suez canal, was built with French money and Egyptian labor so that they could connect the Red Sea to the Mediterranean making it easier to trade and get from place to place instead of going all the way around the southern tip of Africa to get to major trading ports such as India.
  • Berlin Conference convenes to discuss terms for African colonization

    The Berlin Conference occured during the hectic scramble for Africa. This meeting was when European nations met to lay down the division rules for Africa.
  • Queen Liliuokalani takes the throne of Hawaii

    Queen Liliuokanlani was the last queen of Hawaii before economic imperialism took place in Hawaii when Dole plantation overthrew her.
  • Ethiopians defeat the invading Italians at the Battle of Adowa

    Menelik II modernized Ethiopia and kept Ethiopia free from British by playing countries against eachother. He declared war known as the Battle of Adowa and defeated the Italians.
  • Spanish-American War breaks out; Puerto Rico, Spain, and the Philippines taken from Spain

    In 1898 a conflict between Spain and the United States broke out because of America's interference with the Cuban War of Independence.
  • Boer War in South Africa

    Also known as the South African War, this battle took place when the Boers tried to keep "outsiders from gaining political rights and took arms against British after blaming them. This war ended with Britains victory.
  • Most of Africa is under European control
