For now, I know the true meaning of sadness; my mother had died from a disease known as white lung. Before my mother died, we were super excited to move to America. But since she died, my father and I decided it was better to stay in Naples, Italy. -

Decided to Immigrate to America
Hello, my name is Arianna Bruno. I am now 20 years old and living on the farm I was born and raised on. This resulted in my father making the choice for us to immigrate to America. -
We Boarded the Steamboat that would take us to America
On the steamboat it was crowded and there were harsh conditions. As a result of this, we had to sit on the bottom level with another 3,000 people for one whole month. -
Ellis Island
When my father and I arrived there, we were nervous that something would go wrong. Lucky it ended with us safely making it past the inspections and exams. -
Opera Opportunities in the West
My mother had dreamed of being an opera singer and singing at the opera house in San Francisco. Consequently my father and I moved to San Francisco in the west. -
Transcontinental Railroad
In 1862, Congress gave the task of building the railroad to two companies. Because of that I was able to travel by train to the west. -
Singing on the Streets and in Saloons
I had always wanted to sing opera, just like my mom, and I had to start somewhere. So I started with singing on the streets and sometimes in the saloons, if I got lucky. -
Death of Father
This was one of the hardest things I’ve ever gone through. I can’t even begin to explain how horrible I feel right now. I know how it happened though; he was just a victim of a general store robbery. -
Now Opera Singer and Wife
One day in the saloon one guy was admiring my singing, and afterwards he came up to me and told he wanted me to come sing with him at the San Francisco Opera House. As a result in this, I fell in love with him and was started my way to fame. -
My Love for America
Thanks to America I have met the love of my life and everybody knows who I am. In the end America is everything I thought it would be and more.
