I finally got a job at the steel factory in Pennsylvania. The job is hard, but nothing I can't handle. All the men look at me funny like I don't belong here. Irish workers are not welcome.
-
Today at the steel factory, I was burned when the red hot steel I was working on slipped and landed on my left leg. I was forced to stop work till the burns healed, which was almost 3 weeks. During this time, I did not recieve pay and I was afraid I would not have a job when I was healed.
-
My burns finally healed, then I was reinjured. I was jumped by two white men who resented me for taking thier jobs. I could not work for a week which almost cost me my job.
-
I raised enough money to start my journey westward. I bought a great trail horse and supplies for $50.00.
-
I drank from the stream and got cholera. I was weak as a kitten from dehydration and diarrhea.
-
My horse dies from the work of the long journey. I have to travel by foot carrying my heavy gear. I would love to take the train, but I don't have the proper fees. My progress is slow and I only gain about 10 miles a day.
