How I became Hailie Yocum

By Yocum
  • My birth

I was born in Philedphia Pa May 10th 1999 but raised in the suburbs of Philly. My parents are Nicole Stevens and Timothy Yocum they were both very young at the age 19. I am the oldest child out of 6 total sibling three are my half siblings. This helped me become who i am today by encouraging me to not have kids.
  • Removed from care of parental units

At the age of two my mother could no longer take care of me. My father also could not take care of me as much as he tried and wanted to. The judge instead placed me the care of my grandparents and put a re-straining order in place on my mother. My grandparents with the help of my father raised me and my little brother. This happening made me realize I never wanted to become my mother.
  • Meeting my best friend

I met my best friend, Raeanne Elizabeth Schneider, in Kindergarten where we bonded over recess, our hate for the principle, love for dumb jokes and kid things. Growing up I did not have guidance for “normal” kid things. Rae she was that guidance. Making me more normal because I was not a normal child.
  • Learning to ride a bike

I was never an agile person and have always been clumsy. When I was 6 I learned how to ride a bike, making me discover putting wheels on something does not make me any less clumsy. In fact it makes a person more clumsy. I fell over more times than i can count along with crashing into my front gate about 10 times. Eventually I got the hang of it but I still will never forget that wheels don't take away my clumsy self.
  • My Communion

I made my communion in 4th grade and it was an experience. I'm a somewhat religious person now but back then i was focused on looking out the window. The nuns, they did not like me every question asked I would just say “I don't know” and continue to look out the window. It was to me a waste of my 4th grade life. I had other more important thing to think about like the new Ninja turtles episode. Eventually i got yelled at and learned how to pay attention in school with the help of yelling nuns.
  • Death of my favorite uncle

When my uncle died it was expected, he had cancer in his lungs and his liver. He did not get cancer from living an unhealthy life style he unfortunately got cancer from being a marine during Vietnam. The chemicals they used caused cancer. That day he was in the hospital and I came to visit to say my goodbyes. I was in the waiting room next door with my dad when out of nowhere we heard my uncles daughter scream "daddy no" he had died. This made me want to be a doctor even more.
  • Death of my father

On this day my father died early in the morning on holiday weekend. I was a 14 year old freshman and never thought that something like this could happen. My father had been walking home and it was very dark out, he decided to use the cross walk on Roosevelt blvd to get home. He was hit by car of someone who was not paying attention. Immediately he was taken to the hospital where he died. After this I learned just how important it is to be safe driving.
  • Birth of my nephew

After my dad death his girlfriend of about 7 years stayed in contact with us and in our life. I encouraged her to move on, which she did and met a nice guy. Of course with my approval. They did not date long when she got pregnant. My nephew was born a healthy baby boy and I was excited. When he was born I realized everything happens for a reason.
  • Enlistment

In my junior year i decided to enlist in the army. I had wanted to my whole life and made it real. My job is 19D calvary scout , making me the very first female on the east coast and possibly most if America to enlist in this MOS. When i got home that day my grandmother was not very happy because of the job i picked (its a combat job) but she gave up arguing so now she's okay with it.
  • Graduation

I have not graduated yet but I am going to. I will be the first to graduate out of my immediate family. My father was half a credit short and my mother was just a slacker. I will also be the first to graduate with honors track classes. Leaving for basics 2 weeks after is also going to be something never done.
