    Purchase of Alaksa Chapter 10
    William Seward purchased Alaska for 7.2 million dollars. It was sold for about 2 cents and acre. Most thought it was a silly waseful idea but in time he proved them wrong because it was full of minerals, timber, and oil. It was a gain of natural reasurces. I think it should be in the top 15 because it with all the new resources they could start to build there bigger better country.

    All nations wanted to have the greatest army, navy, etc. So they went out and spent lots of money trying to improve them. For awhile some nations fought back and forth for who had the biggest and best army. I think it should be in the top 15 because all of these nations gather huge powerful armies before a world war that they didn't know was coming.

    The U.S.S Maine was ordered to bring home American citizens that were fighting and protect American property. The ship was blown up but no one to this day knows how. In an American news paper it was said the Spanish had done it. I think it should be in the top 15 because it was one of the main instagaitors of the war.

    These were notes sent to other imperialist nations proposing to them that the nations share trading rights with the U.S. Not one country could hold a monoply trade with any part of China. All other countries accepted. I think this should be in the top 15 because without this trade could have been shut down with some countries and without supplies it could of hurt us fataly in more ways than one.

    The Jungle was to expose the chocking conditions that immigrant workers indured. The public reacted strongly to the novel and looked into the conditons of meat packing industry. It even started the Meat Inspection Act the same year the book was published. I think it should be in the top 15 because it got the people involed in the progressive movement.

    The construction of the great white fleet was important because America need a great navy in ordered to compete with other countries and be a great nation. I think it should be in the top 15 because with the navy the U.S. can finally start to be in the race for a top nation.

    The Payne Aldrich Tariff was a compromise that only moderated the high rates of the Aldrich Bill. This is what caused this angered progressives and Roosevelt who thought he abandoned progressivism. He made it worst for himself by saying it was the best Republican party ever passed. I think it should be in the top 15 because it's what got everything in the 1912 eletion so heated.

    The Bull Moose Party was a progressive party.This was a progressive party that Theodor Roosevelt set up during election. This party split the ruplican party into two. This gave Woodrow Wislon an unfair advantage. This led to the election of Wilson who was a progressive president. I think it should be in the top 15 because it caused for a good election that ended in a way that no one thought.

    The Panama Canal was built for a quick way to connect the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean instead of traveling all around South America. I think it should be in the top 15 because this shows imperialism in America because this will allow the U.S. to send their navy from ocean to ocean quicker making them stronger yet.

    The Lusitania was a British liner that carried American lives. German u-boats have sank ships before with Americans on them but this was snaping point for America. Out of the 1,198 people lost, 128 of them were American. I think this should be in the top 15 because this outraged the people of America. Even though President Wilson turned away military response, I think this was one of the reasons America considered going to war.

    The convoy system used heacy guards of destroyers escorted merchant ships back and forth across the Atlanitic Ocean in groups. This method cut the number of sunken ships in half. I think it should be in the top 15 because it stumped the German u-boats allowing the Americans to trade goods without the constant hassel of the Germans.

    A telegram from the German foriegn ambassador in Maxico that was intercepted by Britsh agents. The telegram proposed an alliance between Mazico and Germany. I think this should be in the top 15 because this angered President Wilson and made him realize that we would have to go to war with Germany.

    It was a speech with 14 points. The first 5 were addressed to prevent another world war. The next 8 dealt with boundary changes. The final poitnt called for the league of nations. In oder to follow through with the 14 points the Treaty of Versaile needed to be signed. It did not. I think this should be in the top 15 even though it didn't work or pass it was fought over for 4 years and was really taken into consideration. It could of changed the future.

    Prohibition: The banning of alcoholic beverages was under the "Promoting Moral Improvment" reform. It helped shape up the immigrants and poor city dewllers get their act together by improving their personal behaviors. I think this should be in the top 15 because it cleaned up towns for awhile and mades places safe. It also started uproar between the "homelanders" and the immigrants.

    The 19th Amendment gave woman the right to vote. I think it should be in the top 15 because it was a huge step for womans suffrage and America.
