  • Period: 510 BCE to 410 BCE

    Athens Democracy

    Athens Democracy started in 510 BCE, and worked for about 100 years. Citizens vote directly whether or not they want to pass a law. An assembly (lawmakers) were chosen randomly each year from male citizens. Draco and Solon were very important in Athens Democracy. All citizens of Athens were supposed to vote on the laws made by the assembly.

    Battle of Marathon

    The battle of Marathon was the first of the Persian War.This battle was in 490 BCE. It was between the Athens citizens and a Persian force. This battle was won by Greece because they used the phalanx formation at the city-state, Marathon. This formation consists in foot soldiers (called hoplites) fighting side by side with spear and shield.

    Battle of Thermopylae

    The battle of Thermopylae was the second of The Persian War battles. It was in the year 480 BCE. Greeks united to stop Xerses from taking Athens:300 Spartans and 7,000 other Greeks against 10,000 Persians. The 300 Spartans held Thermopylae, mountain pass, for three days, but eventually lost.

    Battle of Salamis

    The Battle of Salamis was the third of The Persian War. This battle was in 480 BCE. Was a sea battle in which Greeks sink ⅓ of Persian fleet. Greece won this battle, and also the Persian Wars. The battle was fought in the straits between the mainland and Salamis, an island in the Saronic Gulf near Athens, that’s why this battle have this name.

    The Golden Age of Athens

    The Golden Age of Athens started after the end of the Persian War, war that Greece won. The Golden Age occurred between 479 BCE and 431 BCE. Athen became very powerful as the leader of the Delian League. Athens economic property led sculpture, theatre, philosophy, democracy and classical increase. Also, the Greeks Columns were an important fact. Pericles was the best leader of Athens during the Golden Age.

    Peloponnesian War

    The Peloponnesian War was caused by the rivality between the Delian League and the Peloponnesian League. Some of the Greek city-states want to leave the Delian league. Athens punishes the city-states that leave the league by conquering them, and taking the conquered Greeks as slaves. That's why Sparta creates the Peloponnesian league to counter the Delian league. Sparta wins the war.

    Plague of Athens

    The Plague of Athens was an epidemic that devastated the city-state of Athens in ancient Greece during the second year of the Peloponnesian War (430 BC) when an Athenian victory still seemed within reach. In the next 3 years, most of the population was infected, and perhaps as many as 75,000 to 100,000 people, 25% of the city's population, died.
  • 336 BCE

    Alexander The Great´s father conquered Greece

    Alexander The Great’s father conquered Greece. After the Greek city-states were weakened from the Peloponnesian Wars, Phillip the II King of Macedonia conquered Greece. This happens in 336 BCE. He died, making Alexander the Great king at age 20. Alexander conquered Greece plus the Persian Empire(in order: Greece, Anatolia, Egypt Persia, India).
