    Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869. He was born in Porbandar near Bombay.

    Gandhi was married at age 13. He was married to a girl named Kasturba.
  • Leaving

    At age 19, he defied custom and left India to study. He studied law at University College in London.
  • Unsuccessful

    He returned to India. Gandhi was unsuccessful in Bombay, so he decided to go to South Africa. He was the first "colored" lawyer.

    He soon found interest in solving the problem of Indians who had come to South Africa as laborers. He founded the Natal Indian Congress and help Indian rights.

    Gandhi began his peaceful revolution. He said he would rather go to jail or even die before he obeyed the anti-Asian law. Thousands of Indians joined him in his fight. He was imprisoned twice.

    In 1919 he became a leader in the Indian National Congress political party. In 1920 he started a campaign against Britain. This campaign consisted of urging Indians to make there own cotton and boycott British courts, goods, and government. He was then imprisoned again from 1922-1924.

    He protested the salt tax. He lead thousands of Indians to the sea to get their own salt. He was then imprisoned again.

    Gandhi retired in 1934 but still remained its actually leader. He knew that India would receive no freedom if it was with the British Empire. He demanded immediate independence for India in early World War II. He was imprisoned again from 1942-1944.

    India was finally independent in 1947. They split into two different countries (India and Pakistan). On January 30, 1948, Gandhi was killed by a mad Hindu. Later, in 1997, Mahatma Gandhi's ashes were spread in the Ganges river to honor Allahabad, India.
