  • Gandhi is married

    In 1882, Mohandas married a girl Kasturba. Both Mohandas and Kasturba are thirteen years old.
  • Gandhi leaves India for school

    Gandhi set sail for England in 1888 so that he may go to school to earn a degree in law. In doing this, Gandhi left behind his young son and defied the elders objections.
  • Gandhi earns a law degree

    In 1891, Gandhi earned his degree in law from Inner Temple. He enrolled in the High Court of London, but decided to go back to India later that year.
  • Gandhi finds his purpose

    After returning to India and beginning a non-successful law practice, Gandhi was offered a job by Dada Abdulla, an Indian business man, as a legal adviser in South Africa.Through what would become a twenty year stay, Gandhi would find his purpose as a civil rights activist and leader of the Indian community.
  • Gandhi returns home

    Gandhi returned to India in 1915, and would only leave the country once more during his life.
  • Gandhi begins his work

    After traveling across India for a year to familiarize himself with the conditions of the people, Gandhi began intervening when disputes would arise.
  • Amristar Massacre

    The Amristar Massacre, the murder of many innocent Indian protesters by the British, caused Gandhi to begin to organize nonviolent resistance to British rule. A "British boycott" began.
  • Gandhi receives the title Mahatma

    In 1919, India's most famous writer, Rabindranath Tagore, first gave Gandhi the title Mahatma, or "great soul".
  • First Muslim-Hindu riot

    The first Muslim-Hindu riot broke out in 1924. Gandhi greatly distressed by this, began a 21 day fast. Gandhi was Hindu, but was "tolerant" of all religions. He did not want to see blood being shed.
  • The Salt March

    It was now decided that the Indian National Congress wanted nothing less than complete independence from Britain. Gandhi wrote a letter to Lord Irwin to inform his if Britain would not comply, the salt law would be broken. Britain had made a law that prohibited India from making salt. They instead had to buy it from the English. The complies of the Indian people were not met, and Gandhi led a 200 mile march to the coast to make salt.
  • Gandhi negotiates for India

    In 1931, after being imprisoned because of the Salt March, Lord Irwin agreed to hold discussion with Gandhi. After these discussions, a table is formed to discuss the possible independence of India. Gandhi is brought to London, but nothing is officially decided so he is sent home to India.
  • Gandhi creates a new home

    After the Salt March, Gandhi vowed he would not return to his home unless India was granted independence. Since it had not been granted independence, Gandhi set up a village (Segaon) for himself in the middle of India. This village included no electricity or running water.
  • Do or Die

    Gandhi delivered a speech in 1942, in which he told the Indian people they needed to "do or die". He was calling for everyone to lay down their life, if need be,to procure freedom for India. Britain responded by throwing Gandhi and the whole congress in jail.
  • A Divided India

    From 1942-1945, Muslims in India were pushing for a divided homeland. One land for Hindus, and a separate land for Muslims. This spurred the Muslim-Hindu riots.
  • Gandhi distances himself

    New government leaders had come to power in England, leaders who wanted to see a independent India. Gandhi could sense the thirst for power by some and distanced himself from these negotiations because of it. Gandhi devoted his life to aiding those affected by the riots, trying to stop the riots, and creating a unified and peaceful India.
  • Gandhi is assassinated

    On the eve of the 30th of January, 1948, upon arriving at a prayer meeting, Mohandas Gandhi was shot in the chest by a Hindu fanatic. It was on this day, at 5:12 PM that he died.
