  • Birth

    It was on the second of October in 1869 that Mahatma Gandhi was born in Porbandar, British India.

  • Marriage

    Sometime in the month of May, 1883 a 13 year old Mohandas was married to Kasturbai in an arranged ceremony. The two would stay marriedn until her death in 1944.
  • England, and law.

    Sometime after this date, Gandhi left for England for the first time. There he would studdy law with the Inner Temple in hopes of becoming a barrister.
  • Return to India

    In June of 1891 Gandhi returned to India to find that his Mother had died and his family had kept if from him.
  • Finally in Practice

    At some point in the year 1893 Gandhi got a year long contract with a law firm in South Africa that was a part of the British Empire at the time.
  • Racism

    While in Africa Gandhi first encountered severe racism. The most extreme example of this happened in January of 1897 where Gandhi was attacked by a mob of Europeans after arriving in Durban.
  • Boer War

    Sometime in the year 1900 Gandhi volunteered to assist in the war medically, but was turned away. In retaliation he gathered 1,100 volunteers that were trained to heal and aid the wounded. They eventually got moved to the front lines.
  • Zulu War

    When the British went to war with the Zulu Kingdom of Africa Gandhi used this as a way to propse to the British empire that they should allow the Indians to fight for Britian and gain full citizenship.
  • First Protest

    While the protest that took place on this date wasn't his first, this was the moment that Gandhi adopted Satyagraha and nonviolent protest. This protest was a part of a seven year disagreement between the African government and the Indian population.
  • INC

    In 1915 Gandhi returned to India by request, and wound up joinging the Indian National Congress.
  • WWI

    In June of 1918 Gandhi released a leaflet and encouraged other Indians to fight, as the country needs to defend itself.
  • Salt March

    From March 12th to April 6th thousands of protesters followed Gandhi to the coast to make salt in an attack on Brittain.
  • Untouchable Protest

    On the 20th of September Gandhi was in jail, but while in jail he began to protest for the better treatment of untouchables in India by fasting.
  • WWII

    During WWII Gandhi only gave moral support to the troops, not that he's ever actually fought himself.
  • Assassination

    It was on the 30th of January, 1948, that Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated while walking through what is now called Gandhi Smriti with his grandneices.
