    Gandhi goes to South Africa to work for a Muslim Indian law firm. On his way there, he is shocked by the racial discrimination. He isn't allowed to travel first class. This trip is a major truning point for him. He devotes his life to the pursuit of equality and justice.

    Gandhi writes a pamphlet about the discirmination of Indians in South Africa. Great Britian, controls South Africa, views this pamphlet as an anti-government document and begins to view Gandhi as a troublemaker. The pamphlet was created sometime in 1896. I couldn't find an exact date.

    Ganhi returns home to Bombay to bring his wife and children to South Africa. After arriving, the ship is mobbed by angry white men who refuse to let Gandhi and his family stay in South Africa because of the trouble Gandhi is stirring up. Local police help Gandhi and his family leave the ship safely.

    When the Transvaal government announces that all Indians must register and produce identification on demand or risk deportation. Gandhi asks Indian to peacefully resist. The Indian agrre to do so. This sets off 7 years of protest an struggle between the Indians and government.

    Gandhi resufes to register with the government of South Africa in front of a court magistrate. Gandhi is arrested and spends his time in prision reading. HEe reads "Civil Disobedience" by Henry David Thoreau. This makes Gandhi even more committed to peaceful resistance.

    Sometime in 1913, Gandhi is refered to as Mahatma for the first time by Rabindraganath Tagore. This title means "Great Soul" and is given by Hindus to only the holiest men. Gandhi doesn't like this title because he believes all souls are equal.

    Returning to India as a hero in 1915, Gandhi leads the movement to break away from Great Britian. Gandhi publishes the eclaration of Independence of India, representing the Indian National Congress, and makes in case for Indian Independence.

    The people of India are being forced to buy salt only from Britian. Gandhi protests the monoploy by laeding the Salt March from Sabermanti to the Arabian Sea, which is over 240 miles away. Gandhi leads tens of thousands of people by the time they reached the sea. They here broke the law by making their own salt. Protests break out across India. 60,000 people are arrested including Gandhi.

    Gandhi celebrates India's independence from England. This celebration doesn't last long. Hundreds of thousands of people die as a result of violence between the Muslims of Pakistan and the Hindus of India.

    Gandhi blesses a man by the name of Nathuram Vinayuk Godse, a Hindu nationalist. Godse shoots and kills Gandhi for being too sympathetic to the Muslims. Godse felt that killing Gandhi would lead to war that would Muslims. The mourning over Gandhi's death instead brings peace.
