Gandhi Timeline By Reagan Striker Oct 2, 1869 Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born in Porbandar, near Bombay. 1882 Gandhi got married at the age of 13. 1888 At 19, he went abroad to study. 1891 Gandhi returns to India. 1893 Unable to succeed in Bombay, he went to South Africa in 1893. 1894 He founded the Natal Indian Congress to fight for Indian rights. 1899 During the Boer War, he raised an ambulance corps and served the South African government. 1906 Gandhi gave aid against the Zulu revolt. 1906 Gandhi began his peaceful revolution. 1919 Gandhi becomes leader in the newly formed Indian National Congress political party. 1920 He launches a noncooperation campaign against Britain. 1922 Gandhi was led to his imprisonment from 1922 to 1924. 1930 Gandhi made a protest of a salt tax. He was jailed again. 1934 He retired as head of the party but remained its actual leader. 1942 He was imprisoned for the third time, from 1942 to 1944. 1947 Gandhi’s finally won India independence. Jan 30, 1948 Gandhi was killed by a maddened Hindu. 1997 Nearly 50 years after his assassination, the ashes of Gandhi were spread in the Ganges river.
