  In 1919 he became a leader in the Indian National Congress political party. In 1920 he launched a campaign against Britain, telling Indians to spin their own cotton and to boycott British goods, courts, and
government. He then led thousands of Indians in a 200 mile "Salt March" to collect their own salt. - 
  
  Gandhi was assassinated.

  He was imprisoned for his protests and boycotts for 2 years. He was jailed again later.
