How can we ensure that we are on the road to college and career success?
  • Starting at J. L. Hughes Elementary

Starting at J. L. Hughes Elementary
At Hughes Elementary, we are learning math, science, social studies, reading and writing. While these things might seem basic, they are the foundation for everything that we will need to know in the future. We are on the road to achieving our goals because of the work that we are doing in elementary school.

Middle school can help you prepare for college by building good academic skills that are essential to future success. Middle school will also help us build good study habits. It will be our first opportunity to have some choice in what subjects that we learn and that is good practice in future decision making. Overall, Middle School is a stop on our road to college that will help us prepare to be productive adults.
  • Surviving High School

    Surviving High School
High school is important because it is the time where we will start working towards scholarships. We will need a great GPA and dual credit to get a good scholarship, and we can only get that in high school. Also, Northwest ISD offers many options that can help prepare you for a specific career field. These things will help us be successful in college.

    Show me the Money!
To pay for college, we are going to work hard to be provided with a scholarship. We will achieve that by participating in sports, U.I.L. competitions, community service and several other things. Gaining scholarships will help us have confidence in our ability to be successful in college. I know that scholarhips are attainable and we are taking steps now to recieve them. At Hughes Elementary, we are already participating in sports and U.I.L. to prepare for that objective.
  • Working on Our Character

    Working on Our Character
Before we go to college, we should work on our character. Some character traitis that we think are important to build are: honesty, kindness and staying completely positive during hard times. We also need to develop our work ethic to ensure that we are prepared for the rigor of college and our future career. We are already working on these traits right now. We believe that being good students, daughters and friends will help us have future success.
  • Choosing a College

    Choosing a College
The best way to choose a college is by what major they have on the campus. For instance, if you wanted to be a vet, you would have to look for a college that has Pre-Vet, Wildlife Biology, etc. During a college research project, we researched what majors the college we wanted to go to had. We had to find the majors that supported the job that we wanted to do. If the college you want to go to does not have the major you need for your job, then you may not want to go to that college.
  • Are we on the Road to College and Career Success?

In closing, we believe that by following this timeline, we will have future success at college and beyond. To help us illustrate our solution to our problem, we asked students and teachers across our campus what they were doing at Hughes to prepare for college and career success. We hope you enjoy learning about the great things that are happening on our campus! Hughes Video
