Before Louis XVI called the general, France faced economical problems like how crops were failing to grow. Also, how only the Third Estates were only taxed. When the Estates General met, both the First and Second Estates used their votes against the Third. Because of this, the Third Estate broke off to the National Assembly.

The King sent soldiers to the meeting with the National Assembly, and when they saw the soldiers they panicked. So, they stormed the Bastille for weapons and because it showed they defied the King.

The Declaration of the Rights of Man was adopted by the National Assembly. It had told the basic rights and freedoms the people had, and had ideas from the Enlightenment.

During the revolution, the first new constitution was written. It stated that France would become a constitutional monarchy with a legislative assembly.

Louis XVI was sentenced to be executed and four days later on Jan. 21,1793, he died by the guillotine. The Reign of Terror was a time when those against the revolution were executed with guillotine. This ended when Robespierre, a Radical Jacobin, was killed.

Napoleon was a French soldier that was well known and quite popular after a war with Austria. He over threw the Directory after he launched a coup d'état, or a blow of state.

Napoleon had conquered many different parts of the world. He took control of most countries in Europe. He even had Spain conquered, with members of his family in charge.

Since other countries in Europe were under Napoleon's control, he went out to add Russia to his collection. He went in with 400,000+ men and came back with 10,000. The winter cold got to the army and they had to retreat. Also, while Napoleon's army was down, the other countries attacked them wanting to be independent and got him exiled to an island.

The Congress of Vienna met in order to keep peace throughout all the nations in Europe. This was to prevent possible wars in the future.

Napoleon had escaped the island and went back to Europe in order to rule again. So to do this, he attempted to defeat the British General Wellington at Waterloo located in Belgium. He failed and was left at St. Helena, between South America and Africa. Eventually, he died stomach illness.
