    The French economy was in a bad position by the late 1780s. The decades of war had drained the French founds and the country was bankrupt. Louis XVI decided to rice taxes of the aristrocrats but the aristrocrats blocked his plans. In desperation, Louis XVI decided to call a meeting with the General Estates. In the time of that meeting the General Estates last meeting was 170y prior.

    The third state and some clergy joined in a meeting hall, but the door was locked. In suspicion of a plot, they ran to a nearby tennis court and there they swore the Tennis Court Oath, vowing (swore) to stay put until they had created a constitution that placed power on the people. This inspired a wide variety of revolutionary activities months afterwards.
