The base of the Palace of Versailles was finished in 1634 but it wasn't completely built until 40 years later. It was used to house French royalty and was 10 miles southwest of Pairs.

King Louis, began expanding it into his personal palace in 1661. But in 1682, when the palace was near completion Louis moved in and changed the capital from Paris to Versailles to escape his problems Paris.

The third estate renames itself “National Assembly” & decides to draw up a new constitution. Then the third estate arrives at EG – locked out So instead, they gathered at a nearby indoor tennis court – take an oath and it won’t disband until a new constitution is written for France

The state prison on the east side of Paris, known as the Bastille, was attacked by an angry and aggressive mob. The prison was a symbol of the monarchy's dictatorial rule, and the storming became one of the defining moments in the Revolution.

The Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen was a declaration that defined individual and collective rights. It stated that 'Men are born and remain free and equal in rights. ' Also it said the right of speech was the most precious thing.

A crowd of women demanding bread for their families gathered including some men and marched toward Versailles. They also forced the royal court and family to move from the seat of government in Versailles to Paris.

King Louis was accused of treason for the attempt to abandon his people, and he dressed as a peasant & tried to escape to Austria. He then was executed by guillotine.

Lasted 10 months, was lead by the committee of Public Safety, A series of accusations, trials, and executions. Their goal was to eliminate the resistance to the revolution. 300,000 arrested, 17,000 executed by guillotine. Fear caused continued issues with high prices, bankruptcy, and civil unrest.

He overthrew the system of government under the Directory in France. Napoleon is victorious in the coup and seizes control of France as a consul.

Napoleon crowns himself Emperor of the French by grabbing the crown out of the Pope’s hands. He also crowns his wife Josephine Empress as well. This signified his power over the Catholic Church

The greatest achievement in gov’t was the Napoleonic Code. Recognized that all men were equal before the law. Guaranteed freedom of religion as well as a person’s right to work in any occupation.

Napoleon invades Russia for trading w/ Great Britain. Assembled an army of over 500,000. Planned to defeat the Russian in a quick, decisive battle.

With his forces greatly weakened, Napoleon is defeated by a combined British, Russian, & Prussian force. He is banished to the tiny Island of Elba in the Mediterranean Sea.

The Battle of Waterloo, was when Napoleon's forces were defeated by the British and Prussians. It marked the end of his reign and of France's domination in Europe.
