Forced King Louis XVI to call the Estates General. They have not been called since 1614 - 175 years ago. Many people see this as the Aristocratic Revolution which was the first stage of the Revolution.

May 1789 Estates General is called to meet in Versailles and argued over voting for about six weeks. This results in the third estate declaring themselves as the National Assembly and they would draft a constitution.

on July 14, 1789, 900 people of Paris stormed the Bastille which was an old fortress used as a prison and armory. It it like our Independence Day.

Rebellion broke out everywhere in France to help the Assembly. Rural peasant were less concerned about food and grew their own or political power.

There was no bread in the markets so on October 5 6,000 - 7,000 women and revolutionaries marketed to Versailles. Small group broke into the palace by beating and killing the guards. They were stopped by Marcus de Lafayette and they had the king and queen arrested.

The Constitution of 1791 creates a weaker monarchy. This stated that there was still a king but Legislative Assembly would make laws. This created Passive and Active citizens. Also there were three political groups the Jacobins/Girondins, Constitutional Monarchies, and Royalist.

The Reign of Terror led by Jacobins lead by Robespierre with support of the Sans Culotte. They wanted to crush opposition to the Revolution.Jean Paul Marat executed in bathtub. 40,000 were killed either by guillotine or execution.

The committee issued decree to raise an army. By September 1794, France had over 1 million people in the France Army. This was the biggest army Europe had seen.
