Alfred Dreyfus was a Jewish captain in the French Army. He was falsely accused and imprisoned by the military for spying for Germany. Later the army admitted its cover up as there was evidence the case had been falsified. This discredited the military and the Church, favored the liberal parties and eventually led to the separation of the Church and the state. Emile Zola wrote a letter “J’accuse” to the president advocating for Dreyfus and exposing the falseness of his case.
