My family history of literacy and communication - from 1900 to 2017

  • My father and the ink and quill

My father and the ink and quill
my father was born in 1931- he learned to write at the age of 6 with quill and ink. He remembers that it was a demonstration of diligence and tidyness to write without making spots of ink on your paper. He used a cloth to clean the quill and not spill the ink. Boys who were not capable of controlling the movements of their hands and made spots, were severely punished.
  • My grandfather and television

    My grandfather and television
My grandfather was born in 1932 and remembers how is father bought a Telefunken television in 1965 in Napels. This turned their house into a meeting place on Saturdays as the whole neighborhood would come to see a television quiz at their house. The television became the central object in the living room.
  • My mother and the telephone

    My mother and the telephone
My mother was born in 1933. She recalls how in 1948 her father fell ill and they would have to walk to a hotel near by to phone the doctor. There was no possibility to plan meetings at short notice, visiting a person or having dinner at someone's place would be arranged either by sending a written invitation, or dropping by to make an appointment for a next time.
  • My first mobile phone

    My first mobile phone
I bought my first mobile phone in 2005, an LG , and I remember that I continuously forgot that I had one. Friends that were ahead of me, would be annoyed because I would not react to phone calls. It appeared absurd to take it with me everywhere. Gradually, as all my friends and family switched to mobile phones, the habit of taking the phone along and reacting immediately became standard practice.
  • My sister and me and our first color television

My sister and me and our first color television
My sister is from 1962. Our parents bought our the first color television in 1975 to watch a British television series about the Origin of the Nile in color. It seemed magic, but at the same time I recall being used to it quite soon. It did not have any impact on what and when we watched television.
