Exposure to traditional and new media

  • Period: to

    First Exposure to Media

I used to draw a lot when I was young and was taught a lot about how to read and write by my parents so my first exposure would be with traditional paper and writing materials.

    Exposure to phone

This was my first exposure to phones, specifically, an old phone which I used to borrow from my mother just to play games when I was young.

    Exposure to Television and Radios

Back when I was young we used radio sometimes to listen to popular radio channels and the television for news and other shows since we didn't have an internet connection at home and couldn't go to a computer shop at all times. When we finally got our own wifi at home, we gradually stopped relying on television. Nowadays though, the TV and its antenna is just gathering dust now since we watch what we want online in our phone or home PC and rely on internet for news.

    Gaming Consoles

I remember my parents buying an mp4 for me when I was young and my mother buying and sending an Xbox console when she was working abroad. Although I don't have that much memory about them since I didn't use them all that much.

    Exposure to Computers

My mother would sometimes go to a computer shop to do something important and I would usually tag along. She would let me play on the PC she rented whenever she was done with what she's doing. I usually played a racing game back then as well as a game called GTA or something. Then as time passed by I would tag along with my friends to play games in a computer shop when they ask me to. Now I would use the home PC for various important and/or miscellaneous tasks, studying online, and games.

    Exposure to Social Media Sites/Apps

It started when my mother started working abroad, I'm pretty sure she gave an account for an app called Skype through a phone call which we usually used for video calls periodically. I didn't use the facebook account my mother made for me until around 2013-2014. Although I would still rarely use them. I started using them more around 2015 not only for communication and important things, but for entertainment as well.

    Exposure to Internet

My actual exposure to internet aside from social media apps/sites as well as simply searching up stuff that I need to know was around 2013, it started from being invited to play an online game with a friend, although I wouldn't really get hooked into it since I'd usually be playing in computer shops. I got more exposed to internet when I lived with my aunt who had a wifi, then I got more hooked into playing online games, watching videos online, reading novels, and more later on.

    New Normal

I usually only used video calls through skype in the past when communicating with my mother in abroad, then as time passed by we used messenger, which is why I didn't know how to use other types of social apps all that much. Thus the new normal that came with the pandemic which was studying online at home as well as taking classes through virtual meetings was quite a fresh experience to me. It made me rely and get more accustomed with the new media.
