  • East India Company Rule

    East India Company Rule
    The East India Company was sort of the party that came in and took over India. They forced the Mughal rulers to grant it great powers. It also was a threat to the Indian way of life, which cause a negative relationship between the Company and the Indians.
  • The Sepoy Rebellion

    The Sepoy Rebellion
    The Sepoy Rebellion was known as the first war to independence. It started because the British gave their soldiers weapons greased in beef and pork fat. This angered the soldiers. There was also a new law put out duingt hat time that required the Sepoys to fight overseas. This angered them. So, they started a rebellion. The British, however, put down the uprising.

    Mohandas Gandhi (Principles and what he fought for)
    Mohandas Gandhi was a leader that spoke of non-violence and peace between the groups of different people. He taught "satyagraha", which is non-violence basically. He also led several peacful protests throughout his life as well. People followed his teachings and befiefs because he stressed India's rich heritage.

    Formation of the Indian National Congress
    The Indian National Congress was the other political group in India during the partion of India. They formed because they wanted economic reforms and wanted a larger role in the making of British policy for India.
  • Formation of the Muslim League

    Formation of the Muslim League
    The Muslim League was formed to protect the rights of Muslim Indians. Their leader was Mohammed Ali Jinnah. So, they were basically the political group that led the movement calling for a separate Muslim nation to be created at the time of the British partition in India.
  • Salt March

    Salt March
    Gandhi led 50,000 followers to the coast, where they refused to buy salt from the British and began making their own salt. The end result was that all the Indians, including Gandhi, were arrested.
  • Quit India campaign

    The Quit India Campaign was basically an event that was made just before WWII. The Indians agreed to fight for the British, if they could be granted independence immediantly. The British refused, and they began the "Quit India Campaign."
  • Hindu-Muslim Conflict

    Hindu-Muslim Conflict
    The Muslim leader wanted the Muslims to have a seperate nation for themselves. This caused religious conflicts to occur between the two. The Muslims feared for their rights the most during this conflict.
  • Gandhi Assassinated

    Gandhi Assassinated
    Gandi didn't like all the violence, he was basically sickened by it. He also refused to celebrate India's independence. In the end, Gandhi was assassingated by a Hindu extremist.
  • Indian Independence Act

    Indian Independence Act
    The British Parliment passed this. This gave the Indians freedom from British rule and they split up the nations into two nations. This led to conflict and violence in the end. The two groups ended up doing a mass migration, the Hindus to India and the Muslims to Pakistan.
