Mao Zedong Died
Mao Zedong, first president of People's Republic of China, died on the 9th of September, 1976 in Beijing. He was the founder of PRC, as well as the founder of Communist Party of China. His death was significant at that time.
Just after the death of Mao Zedong, all members of the "Gang of Four" were arrested by Hua Guofeng administration by armed forces rather than law enforcement.
The death of Mao Zedong, as well as the capture of the "Gang of Four", decided the Cultural Revolution was over. -
China re-introduced National Higher Education Entrance Examination
After the Cultural Revolution, China re-introduced the exam, which is an extremely important exam for all Chinese students. It ended the policy of only admitting people into higher education with farming, factory and military experience during 1971-1977.This helped countless students to get educated in universities. The Four Modernizations were designed to make China a great economic power by the early 21st century. This event had historical meaning to China; it also was a milestone of future developments.

China Established Diplomatic Relations with US
China established diplomatic relations with the United States. Then, on the first day of 1979, in the Joint Communiqué on the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations, the US recognized that Taiwan is a part of PR China.
The two powers finally established diplomatic relations after the political unrest in past few decades. This was important to both countries. This also made trading, and businesses easier and safer.

Deng Xiaoping Established One Child Policy
China's one child policy was established by Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping in 1979 to limit China's population growth. Citizens living in rural areas and minorities are not subject to the policy. The rule has been estimated to have reduced population growth in the country of 1.3 billion by as much as 300 million people over its first twenty years of establishment.
This policy controls the population in China and affects the Chinese economy to a more positive trend. -
Tian'anmen Square Protest of 1989
Ten of thousands of students protested for several days in many cities in China especially Beijing, at Tian'anmen Square. It was seen as a challege to communism China. There are several causes such as the death of Hu Yaobang, economic reform and political corruptions.
Several hundred civilians have been shot dead by the Chinese army.
This event is seen as one of the major challenges of Communist Party of China. -
Jiang Zemin Became President of China
On the 27th of March, 1993, Jiang Zemin officailly became the president of China after Yang Shangkun.
It indicated a major leader change in China. This would affect the economic situation, develpoment strategies and policies in China while he was in office. -
China Takes Control Over Hong Kong From UK
According to previous contract, China successfully takes control over Hong Kong from the United Kingdom on the first day of July, 1997. At the same time, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region is established.

China's first Astronaut Yang Liwei is sent into space in Shenzhou-5 spacecraft by a Long March 2F rocket. He successfully returned to earth after performing experiments onboard.

18th National Congress of the CPC
On November 8th, the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China took place in Beijing, the capital of China. Xi Jinping is elected as the General Secretary of the CPC, and Chairman of the CPC Central Military Commission. He will be next president of China in early 2013. Other top leaders of the party are changed as well.
This is a significant event and will definitely influence China for some years. Xi Jinping has many new plans and strategies for the country.
