Anglo-Afghan war
Due to the imperialist status of Britain and the posibility of Russian influence on Afghanistan, the UK invaded. The UK had long since been allies of Mexico, so it was hard for them to invade. This would let Porfirio rest easy, however, he still expanded the military becaume of the imperialists governments around the world. -
The first Boear War
The British annexed South Africa in 1877 after the Anglo-Zulu War. The Boers protested and in 1880 they revolted.I doubt this conflict wouldve affected Porifirio much, howerver it did contribute to the worlds more aggresive nature. -
Edison invents the radio
The radio is invented by Edison. This was extremely important for the world at the time. Globalization was more important, cultures were shared between countries, the isolation in the world was dissapearing. The past administrations had worked on laying down telegraph lines, the radio made them uneccesary. The radio was also called "wireless telegraph". -
New technologies come in
New technologies start to become patented such as the zeppelin and dishwasher in 1889. This made the world "smaller" since transport was improving. It also showed the technological progess that the world was having that Mexico was not taking advantage of since 91% of its population lived in extreme poverty under the ownership of some hacendado. -
The Scramble for Africa
The United Kingdom and France were still very much imperialist, they decided to divide Africa’s colonization between themselves.This would affect Porfirio's attitude towards his public relations, trying to stay on the imperialists side and trying to maintain his authority in the world. -
Sino-Japanese war
The Sino-Japanese war was a war between China and Japan over control of Korea. The war ended in 1895 after China’s defeat. The increasingly military behaviour of the world wouldve made Porfirio's military actions normal. It seemed as though the world was arming up, Porfirio mightve just been following the worlds trend with his expansive attitude towards the Mexican military. -
The second Boer war
The second Boer war begun. The British Invaded again because of the recently discovered gold in the Boer Republics and the possibility that Germany could take it first. The imperialist behaviour of Europe wouldve most likely preoccupied Porfirio. Porfirio would most likely want to establish Mexico as a proper sovereighn nation, and gather allies in order to protect Mexico in case of any European invasions. -
The Russian Revolution of 1905
The russian revolution of 1905 began in order to change the russian empire from an autocratic government into a constitutional monarchy. This fed into Porfirio's paranoia, he already shifted the power so that no one had enough power in any given place. His paranoia increased by seeing other governments like his fall under revolution, this was appropriate since the Mexican revolution was in its way. -
Plastic was invented
Plastic was invented by Leo Baekeland in 1907, this simplified the task of electrifying the US and mass production. This set a new standard for nations. The US had long since overtaken Mexico and Porfirio only wanted to catch up. The invention of plastic set another advantage to the United States, Mexico did not exploit the benefits of plastic enough and fell behind.
