  • Researched Thriller

    Researched Thriller
To begin planning our film, we did individual research using sites such as imdb and wikipedia to find out about the genre Thriller and its conventions. This helped us to start planning our film as from researching the convential character types, mise-en-scene and narrative, we knew what our opening title sequence had to include.

  • Formed groups for Preliminary Exercise

    Formed groups for Preliminary Exercise
We formed groups for our Prelimary Exercise, with brand new people that we hardly knew. We managed to work collaboratively, bringing individual ideas to form an overall idea. We discussed each others skills successfully to find out which tasks should be delegated to who. We all seemed to agree well, whcih made working in the group very rewarding, If one of us was struggling with a task, another group member would happily swap tasks to help the other person out.
  • Began filming Preliminary Exercise

    Began filming Preliminary Exercise
Once we completed our planning, we began to film. We filmed in our college hallway and a class room. This helped us to understand the concepts of continuity editing as we learnt how to keep to the 180 degree rule, show match on action and shot reverse shot. We did this successfully by acting out as conversation. During the conversation we kept the 180o rule and used shot reverse shot to show the conversation running smoothly. We also used match on action to show our character opening the door,
  • Preliminary Exercise - Evaluation

On the day of filming, we decided to add in shots that we not on our storyboard as we felt this would improve it. Other than that, there was only one continuity error when I looked at the camera. Overall, we worked well together as a team by delegating tasks and roles and had to improvise on our storyboard. We learnt that on our opening title sequence, we needed to be more prepared and make sure our storyboard was detailed.
  • Initial Ideas Planning - Thriller Opening Title Sequence

Initial Ideas Planning - Thriller Opening Title Sequence
As a group, we individually came up with ideas for our film. We each got inspiration from other Thriller films and started to plan with things such as mise-en-scene in mind. In our group, we each added in our own ideas and improvised to end up with a final narrative for our opening title sequence.
  • Filming day planning

For a film day planning, we planned different things in our group to make the day run smoothly. We storyboarded our opening title sequence; this time thouroughly so that on the day we knew exactly what we were doing. We did recces to ensure that on the day we wouldn't encounter any problems regarding sound, weather, safety issues or the public. We also planned our prop and costume ideas so that on the day, we all knew exactly what we should be wearing and what to bring.
  • Filming Day Issues

Our original plan to film in a Photo Studio was not possible as it was around the busy Christmas period, and everywhere was fully booked. We had to overcome this problem by thinking quickly, otherwise our film would not have worked. We set up a classroom in a college using lights, a camera and a white background to make up a believable photo studio set.
  • Film Day - Opening Title sequence

Film Day - Opening Title sequence
On our filming day, our group were ambitious as we attempted many new shots and angles that we had now learnt. A scene I think worked particuarly well was the bus stop scene. We used many different angles and shots that we had not attempted before, and with a few attempts, manage to do this successfully. The match on action shot we used when our main character walks around the corner to the main road, I also feel is very impressive.
  • Filming Day Evaluation

Overall, I think our end product is succesful and something our group should be proud of. As we made sure we used match on action and 180o rule by never going behind the camera, our film was easy to edit in terms of continuity. As we had more creative options open, we were able to add impressive effects and editing transitions such as the flash on the camera used to cut from scene to scene.
  • Editing Stage

    Editing Stage
In terms of continuity, our film was easy to edit as we kept to the 180o rule, shot reverse shot and match on action. With a lot of creative options open to us, we could add impressive effects and editing transitions, such as using our camera flash to cut from scene to scene. We also added in the titles in a very clever way, to make them look like the were written on the wall, which we wouldn't of been able to do if we didnt have the available software.
  • Overall Evaluation

Overall, I have learnt huge amounts about film making. I learnt the concepts of continuity filming and editing such as the 180o rule, match on action and shot reverse shot. Over the coursework period, I learnt the conventions of a Thriller and what it entailed to make a successful Thriller Opening Title sequence using the Thriller themes and conventions, and the filming and editing techniques required.
