  • 1555

    Peace of Augsburg

    The Peace of Augsburg was a treaty between Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, and the Schmalkaldic League. The purpose of this treaty was to end the conflict and fighting between Roman Catholics and Lutherans in Germany. It allowed the legal division of Christianity permanent within the Holy Roman Empire, Allowing rulers to choose either Lutheranism or Roman Catholicism as the confession of their state.

    French Wars of Religion-

    This war between French Catholics and Protestants and was caused by the conflics between them. The wars stated when The Huguenot Condé and the uber Catholic Duke went to battle under the thinkings that France could have a single king, faith, and law. England funded the Protestants, and Spain helped the Catholics.

    Bartolomew’s Day Massacre

    King Charles IX ordered a killing on Huguenot Protestant leaders in Paris. This set off several people to start killing resulting in the massacre of tens of thousands of Huguenots all across France. Once the killing started mobs of Catholic Parisians began a general massacre of Huguenots.The king then issed royal order to stop the killings but did not work as the massacres spread.An estimated 3,000 French Protestants were killed in Paris, and as many as 70,000 in all of France.
  • Edict of Nantes

    This was a law promulgated by Henery the 5th that gave a large measure of religious liberty to the Huguenots. This gave Huguenots religous freedom to be entitled to worship freely everywhere in France in private.

    30 Years War

    This war primarily was fought in Central Europe and was because of religuos conflict. It started as a battle among the Catholic and Protestant states that formed the Holy Roman Empire. This being one of the brultest war in human history where over 8 millon people lost their lifeś. As the war evolved it was more about who would get the power of goverining europe and lease about religon. This war lasted from 1618-1648
  • Treaty of Westphalia

    The Peace of Westphalia recognized the full territorial sovereignty of the member states of the empire.It stated that all German states, including the Calvinist ones, should determine their own religion. It ended the 30 years war and and created the framework for modem international relations. As a result of this tready the Netherlands gained independence from Spain, Sweden gained control of the Baltic and France was acknowledged as the preeminent Western power.
