Tanner is Born: Trust versus Mistrust
From the time Tanner is born to about 18 months, he creates a bond with his main caregiver which is his mom. The trust he builds with his mom influences how he views the world; he will most likely think of it as safe. In Erikson's first stage of psychosocial development, trust versus mistrust, the main crisis is figuring out if you can trust your caregiver or trust in general. If there's mistrust, the child will think they should fear the world.

As a junior in high school, Tanner becomes the captain of the basketball team. With this achievement, he confirms that he's a great basketball player and decides to continue playing in college. In Erikson's fifth stage, adolescence, the conflict is finding yourself. This can be interpreted by knowing your capabilities, culture, how you fit into society, etc... Being aware of these things can create self-confidence and independence, unawareness can make you confused about your place in life.

    Tanner Marries: Intimacy versus Isolation
At the early age of 23, Tanner decides to marry his high school sweetheart. With this decision, he builds a close and meaningful relationship. In Erikson's sixth stage, young adults commit themselves to an intimate relationship. This connection and support is important for mental health because it requires sharing part of yourself to someone else and in turn, listen to what the other person is sharing. Those who don't find an intimate partner can feel isolated and lack a social support system.
