  • Montesquieu publishes book, "on the spirit of laws"

    In 1748, Montesquieu published a political novel called, "on the spirit of laws". This book focused mainly on the seperation of powers, a constitutional system of government, and the ending of slavery.
  • America declares independence

    On July 4th 1776, the continental congress got together to write a declaration of independence from britain. After this the americas were no longer a british colony, but a new nation.
  • French Revolution

    During the enlightenment, the people of the lower class in french realized how unfair thefrench government had treated them. after a while they overthrew the monarchy, and France's government was forever changed.
  • Napoleon overthrows the Directory through a coup d’etat

    In 1799 Napoleon's coup d'etat overthrew the Directory and established the French Consulate. This was the beginning of a very significant era inFrench history, known as the Napoleonic era.
  • Napoleon crowns himself emperor, begins to create a vast European Empire

    In 1804, during the height of his power, Napoleon declared himself emperor of France. He was very popular with the people at this time so most were in favor of his new postiion.With his new power he led a conquest on all of Europe.
  • Haiti wins freedom from France

    In 1804 the Hatian revolution began with a slave revolt in the French colony of saint-domingue. The revolution was one of two attempts ( the other being the american revolution) to successfully gain independence from a european country at the time, aswell as, the first succcessful revolution led by slaves.
  • Padre Hidalgo calls for Mexican Independence

    in 1810, a priest named Hidalgo his group of other liberals declared to spain that Mexico deserved independence.After a while, plees from mexico made Spain concede and mexico became a nation in 1821.
  • Napoleon is defeated at the Battle of Waterloo

    After Napoleon had returned to power, he quickly gained an army and marched into belguim near waterloo to fight an Anglo-Allied army under the command of the Duke of Wellington combined with a Prussian army. His army was untrained and this led to his downfall. Napoleon was no longer emperor of france.
