    In this book, Montesquiueu talks about an idea called the separation of powers. This was a proscess that would keep any individual group from rising up and taking total control of the gov. This idea was later called checks and balances.

    Before the British owned colonies in the Americas. These colonies were thriving with colonist that is until the british passed a series of acts. The first of these acts was the Navigation act. This prevented any colonists from selling their best goods to any other country except for Britan. Many acts followed to increase an uprising and later to the decloration of independance.

    A growing number of french people looked to the American Revolution. The American Revolution and the new englightenment ideas greatly influenced the French Revolution. The third estate which was made up of peseants. The peseants were greatly unhappy with the way the french gov. was going so they tried to change it. Then, hey were locked out of the National Assembly, this resulted in the famouse tennis court oath. These peseants went on to keep fighting and assure a revolution in France.

    After Napoleon returned from Egypt, he imeddiatley seized polictical power. The took troops and seized the national legislature and drove out its members. Then the lawmakers established the three consuls, one of whom was Napoleon. he then took the entire french gov. for himself and assumed the powers of a dictator.

    Napoleon crowned himslef emporer and French voters supported him. He wanted to control the rest of europe and reassert power in the Americans. He knew the way to do this was to produce sugar. He soon made the sugar producing colony of Saint Dominique.

    Napoleon established a sugar producing colony in Saint Dominique with slaves. The slaves soon revolted because the slave to owner ration was about 100/1. Tousannt L'Ouverture was the leader in this revolt and he quickly took control of the colony. He sooned demanded his rights from the french peoples. The French tried to take back the colony but were devestated by disease. Rebels also turned out to be skilled fighters.

    Padre Hidalgo was mexican priest. He started a rebellion with the Creoles, Indians, and Africans against the Spanish rulers. After their revolt Jose Maria Morelos took the leader job. This group soon became an empire known as Central America.

    Napoleon is defeated at the Battle of Waterloo
    After his downfall and being exiled to elba Napoleon wanted to have one last battle with the British. This battle was called the Battle of Waterloo. He was defeated by the British and withdralwed to St. Helena and died there in 1821.
