In 1748 de Montesquieu publishes a book called On the Spirits of Laws. In this book he proposed the seperation of powers. He also said that powers should check powers so no one person or group of people get too much power.

In 1776 America declares their freedom from England. They were feed up with King George III and the fact that they did not have representation in the Parliment.

The French watched as America demanded its independence and hoped for something like that to happen in France. Many copies of the Declaration of Independence circulated around France. Many people realized they deserved those rights and the revolution was born.

In 1799 Napoleon overthrows the Directory by proposing the ideal of a consul. He and along with two other people were selected, but he quickly became the number 1 consul and deminished the importance of the 2nd and 3rd.

The Haitians saw how the French people won their independence and they wanted the same thing. Napoleon responded to this uprising by sending in troops, but most of the troops sadly died of Yellow Fever. This event helped the Haitians successfully revolt.

In 1804 Napoleon starts to gain the love of the French people and signs a concordat with Pope Pius VII. This means that the Pope will let him handle all of the government affairs, and the church would not. Napoleon also began invading other nations and conrtolling them.

Padre (Miguel) convinced his peasant followers to rebel aginst the Spanish. They were out numbered and in the end were defeated.

Napoleon is defeated by the Duke of Wellington. In the beginning the French stood their ground, but later in the day the Prussians came to help England and Napoleon and his army was defeated.
