    Great Leap Forward (1958-1961) As a result of the successful economic reconstruction that had taken place in the early 1950s under the First Five Year Plan, the Party leadership headed by Mao Zedong considered the conditions ripe for a Great Leap Forward (大跃进, Dayuejin) in early 1958. Mao used propaganda in the program's name to get citizen to follow his lead.

    one year after the the great leap forward program lauched the program shattered china's economy. Poor agriculture production, droughts, and floods caused one of the worst famines in history. From 1958-1960 as many as 20 million people died of starvation or desease. China abondoned The Great Leap Foward, and Mao's influence wavered.

    Mao lauched the Cultural Revolution in 1966, which aimed to remove opposition to the communist party. Mao's new supporters were called Red Guards. They punished people who spoke out against Mao's pinciples and at this time China's economy was weakened. Also the red guards at a rally waved copies of the "LITTLE RED BOOK", a collection of Mao's sayings. Chinese citizens had almost no political freedom at this time.

    In 1989, the chinese military denied citizens a basic human right-freedom of speech -when it attacked protesters calling for democracy in Tiananmen square.For weeks protesters remained to occupy the building in Beijing. the military killed hundreds and wounded thousands in effort to spot protests. As the events of 1989 unfolded, people around the world spoke up against the chinese government.
